In a fierce match in the English Premier League, Manchester United almost lost the game once again. Fortunately, Danish striker Højlund scored a crucial goal in the 6th minute of extra time to equalize for his team and prevent them from losing on the road to Bournemouth. The goal not only earned the Red Devils a point, but also gave Højlund and United a glimmer of hope for the season.
For most of the game, United were poor. The team lacked pace and efficiency in attack and looked the same as they have in recent games. Despite the fact that their opponents, Bournemouth, only had 10 players on the pitch, United didn’t capitalize on an opportunity to equalize until late in the game.
The turning point came after Bournemouth’s Ewanilson was sent off. With a man down, Bournemouth began to back off, giving United more space. However, the Red Devils’ attack still looked disorganized and lacked a clear organization and plan.

Hoylund’s goal was one of the few bright spots in the game. He skillfully capitalized on a shot from teammate Ugarte and sent the ball into the back of the net. This ability to “take chances” is a striker trait that has been lacking for United this season. Hoylund showed the intuition and acumen that many of his teammates lack.
During the game, United fans in the stands sang “United to Bilbao”, a sign of their enthusiasm for the UEFA Cup semi-final. However, the team’s performance on the pitch is worrying. Their current form is hardly enough to make their La Liga rivals Athletic Bilbao nervous.
Athletic Bilbao are actively preparing for the UEFA Cup semi-final. They don’t have the same intense schedule as the EPL, and they’re in stable form at the top of the La Liga table. What’s more, they have the most solid defensive system in La Liga. Man U’s current problem is the lack of an effective offense. If they don’t improve soon, the game against Bilbao will be very tough.
Although Hoylund scored the equalizer, he had only one shot on goal in the whole game. He made several runs throughout the game, but missed opportunities due to long balls from goalkeeper Onana or poor passes from his teammates. On one of those occasions, he looked a bit helpless as he slipped while trying to receive a pass from teammate Dolgoo.
Looking at the numbers, Hoylund had only 25 shots on goal and scored four goals in the entire Premier League season. His team-mate Gana Joe, on the other hand, had 81 shots on goal during the season – eight in this game alone – but scored just one more goal than Hoylund. This suggests that neither man has been able to take advantage of enough goal-scoring opportunities, and that United’s attacking efficiency still has a lot of room for improvement.
Ganacho’s attacking style is aggressive, but he is sometimes too impatient and often chooses to shoot from a very tight angle or from a long distance, an attempt that is often ineffective. Even when the opponent was down to 10 men, he didn’t choose to calmly organize his attack and instead just shot at the goal. This irrational style of play hardly allows the team to score more goals.
In contrast, Hoylund’s goal reminded the team that United could have found a more effective way to break through if they had better organized their attack around a winger. Hoylund is not the type of player to run up and down the field on his own, but with the right pass he can deliver the killer blow.
The draw is also a wake-up call for United. The UEFA Cup semi-final will be the real test. If United continue to play as sporadically and uncoordinatedly in the competition as they have done so far, reaching the UEFA Cup final, let alone winning it, may be a pipe dream.
Hoylund has already shown that he can come up with the goals when it counts. The question is whether United’s midfielders and outfield players are ready to create more chances for him. Will they be able to get the ball to him in time when he is in a good position? This will have a direct impact on United’s performance in the upcoming European matches.
Overall, this game once again exposed the problem of United’s chaotic and loosely organized attack. Hoylund’s goal was eye-catching, but if the team’s overall style of play remains unchanged, it’s hard to change the big picture, even with a great scorer. The next game will be crucial for Man U. They will need to find their form quickly if they are to progress in Europe.
