Recently, The Times reported that contract negotiations between West Ham United forward Antonio and the club have hit a snag. The player’s future has become increasingly uncertain.
Antonio suffered a serious car accident six months ago, resulting in a broken leg. He is currently working hard to recover and hopes to return to the pitch as soon as possible. He plans to participate in the CONCACAF Gold Cup, which will take place from June 14 to July 6 in the United States and Canada, representing the Jamaican national team. Jamaica will face Guatemala next Tuesday, followed by matches against Guadeloupe and Panama.
The 35-year-old Antonio hopes to prove his fitness through this tournament and secure a new contract with West Ham United. His current contract, which pays over £90,000 per week, expires at the end of this month. The club has offered a short-term deal, but he has declined it. The base salary is lower, with additional bonuses contingent on meeting certain appearance targets.

Antonio is seeking a longer-term, more secure contract, but West Ham United are unwilling to increase their offer. This is because he only made 16 appearances and scored one goal last season before sustaining an injury, with his performances failing to impress.
Due to the impasse in negotiations, Antonio recently hinted on social media that he may leave the club. He posted a video recounting his journey from the car accident to his recovery. The video begins with footage of the severely damaged Ferrari—the car he was driving on December 7 last year when he crashed into a tree in Essex after training, resulting in multiple fractures in his thigh bone. After undergoing surgery, he was discharged from the hospital on New Year’s Eve.
The video shows him progressing from learning to walk again, to walking with crutches, and finally returning to the training ground to resume ball training. The background music features a quote from a motivational speaker, and Antonio wrote beneath the video: “Belief will overcome all challenges.”
Despite the severity of his injuries, Antonio remains confident that he can return to the field. In an interview with L’Équipe in May, he stated: “I know I can still play football; the question is whether the club is willing to give me the opportunity. That’s what matters most to me, but I’m still waiting for their response. In the meantime, I can only focus on my recovery to ensure I can contribute wherever I am next year.”
Since joining West Ham United from Nottingham Forest in 2015, Antonio has made 323 appearances for the club, scoring 83 goals and three times finishing as the team’s top scorer in the Premier League. He is undoubtedly one of the most important attacking players for the club in recent years.
Now, the veteran’s career is at a major crossroads. Will he stay and continue his career with the Hammers, or seek a new challenge elsewhere? The answer may soon be revealed.
